Germany to ban unvaccinated from restaurants and some other places
Germany imposed strict nationwide cutback on people who have not yet taken the vaccine against Covid-19 and paved the way to making shots compulsory to check a brutal surge in infections.
In one of her final acts as chancellor, Angela Merkel held talks with her incoming successor, Olaf Scholz, and Germany’s 16 regional premiers on Thursday, where they agreed on new restrictions including permitting only people who are vaccinated or recovered from the COVID virus into restaurants, theaters and non-essential stores.
The officials also came up with a plan to make Covid shots mandatory, saying that the lower house of parliament would vote on it soon. Scholz said he expects the measure to pass, and Merkel — who is stepping down from all of her political posts — said she would vote for it if she was in the Bundestag.
